Hey Sound School! Ready to dive into your 2026 Summer Reading?

Getting your reading done this summer is as easy as 1-2-3. Here is your official Summer Reading Guide to keep you on track:
  • Step 1 - Research: Find a fiction novel you'll actually enjoy! Just make sure it is text-only (no graphic novels), over 100 pages, and at or above your reading level.
  • Step 2 - Read: Finish your book before the first day of school. Pro-tip: Take notes along the way on the parts that stand out to you!
  • Step 3 - Write: When we get back in the fall, your new English teacher will give you an in-class essay prompt based on your book. This will be graded in PowerSchool, so don't wing it!

Need to find the perfect book? There's options:
  • New Haven Free Public Library: Join their awesome summer program! Kickoff events start in early June.
  • Free Ebooks: You have free access to tons of digital titles through MackinVia and Sora.  Use your school Gmail account to log in. In Sora, make sure to click on New Haven Public Schools under "Explore"  to add New Haven Free Public Library to get the most titles!
Enjoy a relaxing break this summer, happy reading, and set yourself up for success this fall!

What an incredible year it has been for the Sound School Book Club!

Our 2026 reading journey took us through some truly unforgettable stories, starting with the gripping twists of By the Time You Read This I'll Be Gone by Stephanie Kuehn, followed by the beautiful and poignant The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros - which is extra exciting since it is also this year’s featured book for the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas! We wrapped up our reading list by diving into the supernatural suspense of Blue is for Nightmares by Laurie Faria Stolarz.

The absolute highlight of our year came on April 22nd, when our crew headed over to Wilbur Cross High School for the Citywide Book Club Event. It was an amazing day filled with book-related activities, fun games, great food, and a wonderful opportunity to socialize and connect with fellow high school book club members from all across the city. Huge shoutout to everyone who read, discussed, and shared their passion for stories with us this year - you made every chapter count!

Big news for all manga fans at The Sound School!

The Library Media Center is thrilled to announce a new collaboration with the New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) to bring more of the stories you love directly to our campus. Every couple of months, we will feature a new rotation of popular series from the NHFPL collection.

We are kicking things off with two legendary titles: One Piece and Slam Dunk. Dive into the high-seas adventure of One Piece, which follows a crew of "Straw Hat Pirates" as they search for the ultimate treasure and fight for freedom across the ocean. If you're more into sports, check out Slam Dunk, the iconic story of Hanamichi Sakuragi, a hot-headed delinquent who joins the basketball team to impress a girl, only to discover a genuine passion for the game and the power of teamwork.

The best part is that access is easier than ever.  Students can borrow them right here in the LMC using your regular school library account.
